GYA Judges Program – Updated January 1, 2010
Currently there are a total of 10 Certified Senior Judges and 11 Certified Judges in all of GYA. (Nine new Certified Judges have been added since the exam in New Orleans in February of 2003) This total, 21, now represents as of January 1, 2010 the same level of judges as GYA had in 2003. We just recently gained four new certified judges. GYA has an urgent need to increase our efforts to have additional certified judges within GYA. Ask any member of the Appeals Committee and I am sure you will find that having at least one certified judge at our events can make a big difference!
GYA has a plethora of events, and GYA Judges are involved in most, but not all of these events. As part of the GYA Judges Program all organizations having an event within GYA are asked to contact and use GYA Judges. This should become second nature as experience will show that having the knowledge and abilities of our Judges at the event help improve the overall quality of the event.
GYA and Area D are actively recruiting and supporting judge candidates with a new emphasis on recruiting younger judge candidates. A new Judge in Training (JIT) program will be launched early in 2010 and additional information will be posted here and on the Area D site. The program includes a judge mentor program and all the active judges in GYA are being encouraged to actively support new judge candidates. The new President of US SAILING, Gary Jobson, is committed to recruiting younger people at all levels in our sport and to simplifying the race official certification process. A listing of current candidate judges follows on this page and clubs are encouraged to actively support these candidates by inviting them to help at events. Anyone wishing to be included on the candidate listing should contact any GYA Judge or the GYA Administrative Judge as listed on this web site.
Certification of judges is per the requirements of US SAILING. A complete description of the requirements is available on the US SAILING Judges Committee site. A training seminar and exam are part of the requirements and currently certified judges must attend the seminar and pass an exam once every four (4) years to remain certified. The workshop format has changed considerably and is not focused on passing the judge exam but on exercises to help judges and potential judge candidates with the process involved in conducting hearings, taking evidence, understanding the nuances of the Racing Rules of Sailing, etc. A Judges Workshop primarily for the GYA is scheduled for March March 27-28, 2010 at SYC. All current certified judges and prospective judges as well as any interested parties are encouraged to attend this workshop. Click here for additional details and please register on US SAILING site for this workshop. If any additional information is required please contact the GYA Administrative Judge, Chris Luppens.
