GYA Judges ProgramUpdated May, 2013

Currently there are a total of 14 Certified Senior Judges and 11 Certified Judges in all of GYA. (One new Certified Judge, Charles Harp, was added In March of 2013.) In addition a Judges Workshop was held in New Orleans at  Southern Yacht Club in March of 2013 and 17 people attended that seminar and 3 of these people took and passed the judges exam for the first time. This current total of  25 US Sailing Certified Judges is the highest number the GYA has had for a few years and hopefully will continue to increase based on the results of the last workshop.

GYA is fortunate to have a large number of quality sailing events, and GYA Judges are involved in most, but not all of these events. As part of the GYA Judges Program all organizations having an event within GYA are asked to contact and use GYA Judges.  This should become second nature as experience will show that having the knowledge and abilities of our Judges at the event help improve the overall quality of the event.

A listing of current candidate judges follows on this page and clubs are encouraged to actively support these candidates by inviting them to help at events. Anyone wishing to be included on the candidate listing should contact any GYA Judge or the GYA Administrative Judge as listed on this web site.

Anyone interested in becoming a certified judge (or any type of certified race official) should  note that the GYA Foundation will support the certification process by paying for the cost of required seminar/workshop, exam and materials.

Certification of judges is per the requirements of US SAILING. A complete description of the requirements is available on the US SAILING Judges Committee site.  A training seminar and exam are part of the requirements and currently certified judges must attend the seminar and pass an exam once every four (4) years to remain certified. If any additional information is required please contact the GYA Administrative Judge, Chris Luppens.
